One day before he leaves for vacation, President Barack Obama will take questions from reporters at a 3 p.m. ET news conference.

The event will likely mark Obama's first comments on his decision to cancel a September summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in response to Moscow's decision to grant asylum to intelligence leaker Edward Snowden.

In the aftermath of the Snowden revelations, Obama also is expected to unveil measures that would increase transparency about the government's controversial surveillance programs, a senior administration official tells Reuters.

He'll also likely be asked about the terror threat that has closed U.S. embassies across the Middle East. Other topics that could come up include: the ongoing debate over immigration reform and the possibility of a government shutdown amid a budget stalemate with Congress.

The news conference comes one day before Obama and his family head to Martha's Vineyard for their annual August getaway.
